Uhm, I beg to differ. You're focused on SP, but although SP are important, it's not the only important thing. Being 'better' with regard to SP doesn't really mean being better in the game. High SP only mean that you can do something, or more than the other guy. But only actually doing things lets you achieve your goals, makes you rich or well known.
Let's take a look at some professions:
Miner A miner who doesn't play is actually a poor miner. That's about it. If you don't macromine, which is against the rules, an active miner is the one with the Hulk and the cash.
Trader A trader without cash is a poor trader. That's also about it. If you don't put time into trading, you won't reap the profits.
PvP'er A PvP'er who doesn't play doesn't gather experience. He also doesn't have fun, since SP and ships are merely the tools of having fun for a killer. So the high SP guy has an advantage skill-wise and therefore ship-wise, yes. But for one thing it doesn't take more than a couple of months to be PvP competitive and for another thing he might still lose to the active low SP guy due to lack of experience and crappy fitting.
Mission-runner An active mission runner has the cash to buy and fit a Navy Raven. Enough said
Scientist An inactive scientist can actually do long time research jobs and gather RP. So yeah, you might be right regarding this profession. But then again, a R&D char doesn't do that much anyway and in most cases is an alt. However yes, you can't easily catch up to a high SP industrial char, except for some things that involve a lot of cash, like buying a T2 BPO or other expensive BPOs.
